The name psychiatry, literally “medical treatment of the soul,” was coined in 1808 by Johann Christian Reil, a brilliant German physician, the son of a Lutheran pastor. Treating mental illness was meant to be practiced with an appreciation for medicine, psychology and philosophy. As a psychiatrist with Christian faith, theological understanding is also a part of our resource used to heal patients. What does a psychiatrist with Christian faith look like now and how do we integrate our faith and our practice?

The Psychiatry Section partnered with the ROW Foundation during APA 2018 in New York. Together, OWP Pharmaceuticals and the ROW Foundation form a “pharmaceutical social enterprise.” OWP is a for-profit corporation, and ROW is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity. OWP produces branded-generic neuroscience medications for sale in the United States, and through its strategic organizational structure with OWP, ROW shares in a significant portion of the profits from those sales. This sustainable and scalable funding arrangement allows ROW to carry out its charitable goal of “improving the quality of training, diagnosis and treatment available to persons living with epilepsy and associated psychiatric disorders in under-resourced areas of the world.” We hope the diversity of the medications marketed by OWP will be useful as our Psychiatry Section doctors provide support to global workers around the world.
